High-Performance Object Detection on Edge AI Hardware

High-Performance Object Detection on Edge AI Hardware

The Challenge

Deploying computer vision models on specialised edge AI hardware requires more than simply running a trained model. The model must be compatible with the target accelerator, the inference runtime must be correctly integrated, and performance must be evaluated under the intended deployment conditions.

For teams building real-time computer vision applications, inference throughput can directly influence whether a target hardware platform is suitable for the use case.

The Engineering Approach

Rootblock Labs worked on preparing and evaluating a lightweight YOLOv8n object-detection model for deployment on the Blaize X1600 GSP edge AI accelerator.

The engineering workflow focused on:

  • Preparing the object-detection model for the target hardware.
  • Working through the required model conversion and inference workflow.
  • Configuring inference for the target input resolution.
  • Evaluating inference throughput on the accelerator.
  • Assessing the feasibility of high-throughput object detection on specialised edge hardware.

Benchmark Result

The reported benchmark achieved more than 100 frames per second (FPS) using YOLOv8n on a Blaize X1600 GSP at an input resolution of 416 × 244 pixels.

This result demonstrates the potential for high-throughput object detection on specialised edge AI hardware.

Benchmark note: The 100+ FPS figure is a reported technical benchmark. It should not be interpreted as end-to-end application performance. Final benchmark documentation should specify the software versions, model configuration, precision, batch size, preprocessing, decoding, and measurement methodology.

Why This Matters

Edge deployments often operate under constraints that differ from conventional GPU environments. Understanding achievable inference performance helps engineering teams evaluate hardware options before committing to a production architecture.

The benchmark provides a technical reference point for teams evaluating specialised accelerators for real-time computer vision workloads.
